WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT the Emissions from YOUR GAS STOVE?? wait, what?
I just read this article this morning about gas stoves… what the that? I never would have thought about this so this was really eye opening. If you are needing a new stove, please consider this info when making your choice between gas & electric:
“Your natural gas cooking stove may leak methane even when it is turned off, a new study from Stanford University warns. This is important because methane is a much more potent greenhouse gas than even carbon dioxide, though it doesn't linger in the atmosphere nearly as long. Scientists measured methane released from gas stoves in 53 California homes. They measured the amount of methane that is leaked each time in that second before the gas lights on fire. They also measured how much unburned methane is released during cooking. Unlike previous studies, they measured how much methane is released when the stove is off. It turned out that's when about 80% of methane emissions from stoves happen, loose couplings and fittings between the stove and gas pipes are the culprit. The study also stated that simply owning a gas stove over a 24 hour period, had more emissions then the amount emitted while the burners were on. Individually, that's a tiny amount, but collectively, more than 40 million gas stoves in the US, the amount of leaked methane every year has about the same climate change effect as the carbon dioxide from 500,000 gasoline-powered cars.
